A quick recap (2): five interesting stats from last season

Eleven days to go until the start of the new season in the Staatsloterij Hoofdklasse. As a warm-up, we’re rewatching the past season with five striking statistics, this time from the men’s competition.

1️⃣ Rotterdam the most prolific team
National champions Rotterdam were the most prolific team in the Hoofdklasse last season: 88 goals in 22 matches, a significant improvement on the club record set in 2016–2017 (82 goals).

The Rotterdam side clearly favoured playing at home: 51 goals on home turf, 37 away from home. Den Bosch followed with 84 goals, but with the balance reversed: 37 at the Oosterplas and no fewer than 47 in away matches.

2️⃣ Most clean sheets for Bloemendaal
Bloemendaal kept a clean sheet more often than any other team: seven clean sheets in 22 regular league matches (four at home, three away). Oranje-Rood and Rotterdam shared second place with five matches without conceding a goal.

Remarkably, despite the seven clean sheets, Bloemendaal was not the team that conceded the fewest goals: that honour went to ORANJE-ROOD, who conceded just 29 goals in 22 matches (an average of 1.32).

3️⃣ Flawless season for Oranje-Rood
For the first time in the club’s history, Oranje-Rood  remained unbeaten throughout the entire regular league: eight wins and three draws at home in Eindhoven (27 points) and nine wins and two draws away from home (29 points).

Only four other teams have ever managed to remain unbeaten throughout an entire season: Amsterdam (1973–1974), Klein Zwitserland (1978–1979 and 1979–1980), Kampong (1980–1981 and 2017–2018) and Bloemendaal (2017–2018 and 2019–2020).

4️⃣ Four teams unbeaten after going 1-0 up
Four of the twelve teams did not lose a single match last season after scoring the opening goal themselves: Oranje-Rood (W14 D4), Pinoké (W12 D2), Amsterdam (W11 D2) and Klein Zwitserland (W7 D3).

Relegated sides Hurley (W1 D2 L1) and Laren (W1 L3) benefited the least from taking the lead: only a quarter of the matches in which they scored the opening goal resulted in a victory.

5️⃣ Be sure to arrive early at ORANJE-ROOD matches
Oranje-Rood fans were well advised last season to arrive at the pitch in good time for their favourites’ matches. Of all twelve teams, the Eindhoven side scored the most goals within the first five minutes (eight in total).

Looking at the number of goals scored in the first quarter, Rotterdam led the way with 21 goals within fifteen minutes. Den Bosch and Pinoké followed with nineteen and eighteen goals respectively.
