Two games with four goals highlight Timo Boers’ qualities
Just four days to go until the start of the Staatsloterij Hoofdklasse. Every day, we’re counting down to the start of the season with a special fact. Today, we’re focusing on Den Bosch defender Timo Boers, last season’s top scorer.
Last season, Timo Boers scored four goals in a single match not once, but twice. Remarkably, the Den Bosch penalty corner specialist achieved this twice against Schaerweijde: first at home and six months later in the away fixture.
In the 9–0 home victory in October, Boers scored four times from penalty corners. In April, in the 1–8 win in Zeist, he again scored four goals: three from penalty corners and one from a penalty stroke. In the two matches against Schaerweijde, he thus scored a total of eight goals.
Following in Hertzberger’s footsteps
No other player scored at least four goals in more than one league match last season. Struan Walker of Oranje-Rood and Rik Sprengers of Kampong each managed this once. Boers was also the first player since Jeroen Hertzberger in the 2022–2023 season to score four goals in a single match on multiple occasions in one season. Since the Hoofdklasse began in 1973, such a feat has only been achieved in 25 player-seasons.
The two four-goal performances were the highlights of an impressive season. Boers scored at least one goal in seventeen of the 22 league matches and recorded five hat-tricks. On seven occasions, he scored at least twice in a single match.
With 31 goals, Boers convincingly claimed the title of top scorer in the Hoofdklasse Men. All his goals came from set pieces: 25 from penalty corners and six from penalty strokes. In doing so, he accounted for almost 37 per cent of Den Bosch’s 84 league goals.
