How a madcap top-flight match produced a remarkable first

It was a goal-fest at the Wagener Stadium last season. On 21 September 2025, Amsterdam and Den Bosch scored a combined total of fourteen goals, resulting in a spectacular 8–6 final score. Such a result had never been seen before since the Hoofdklasse began in 1973.

The score seesawed back and forth constantly. Amsterdam took the lead three times, but Den Bosch went into half-time with a 3–4 lead. After the restart, Amsterdam equalised and the home side pulled ahead to 5–4. That lead, too, proved precarious: Sweder Koens levelled the score for Den Bosch in the 47th minute, making it 5–5.

Amsterdam then struck with lightning speed. Boris Burkhardt made it 6–5 in the very same minute and, a minute later, converted another penalty corner to make it 7–5. Timo Boers brought the tension back in the closing stages, after which Mustapha Cassiem sealed the victory with the 8–6 goal in the final minute.

The fourteen goals were scored by eleven different players. Burkhardt, Mustapha Cassiem and Dayaan Cassiem each scored twice. Remarkably, exactly seven goals were scored before half-time and seven after the break. Eleven goals came from open play and three from penalty corners.

The match not only marked a first, but also a special milestone. The 8–6 result was the 100th different final score in the history of the Hoofdklasse Men. Up until that Sunday, there had been exactly 99 unique results since 1973.

Moreover, it was only the fourth Hoofdklasse match ever in which at least fourteen goals were scored. The previous one had taken place 31 years earlier, when Amsterdam won 12–2 away at Push in 1994. Only Klein Zwitserland’s historic 15–0 victory over Breda in 1981 produced even more goals.
